Guidelines for Solemnizing Marriages by the Temple Priests of the Hindu Temple
  1. In pursuance of the provisions in the Ontario Marriage Act, the Temple priests of the Hindu Temple of Ottawa-Carleton will not perform any marriage without receiving a valid marriage license duly issued by the Government, no matter whether the ceremony is performed at the temple or outside.

  2. It is preferable to receive the marriage license from the couple (bride and bridegroom) before the marriage, at least a day earlier.

  3. After the marriage ceremony, the temple priest must certify the marriage by completely filling, witnessing, and signing the document, and giving it back to the couple.

  4. The Temple priest must perform the marriage ceremony only according to Hindu religious rituals.

  5. The Hindu Temple maintains a marriage register and keeps a record of all marriages, performed by its priests. The marriage record form in the register must also be completely filled, witnessed, and signed. It is preferable that the witnesses for the temple marriage register are the same individuals who witness for the marriage certificate. A designated member of the Board of Directors of the Hindu Temple should review the register to ensure that all the guidelines and procedures are fully followed.

  6. An already Hindu married couple may request the Temple priest to perform a Marriage-Like ceremony for the couple to celebrate their marriage, for occasions such as some special marriage anniversary, or for any personal and family reasons. For the marriage-like ceremony, the temple priest does not require the marriage license and cannot certify the marriage as the couple is already married, either in Canada or abroad.
Temple policy revised

Performing Hindu wedding out of town and out of province

  1. Temple priests can go out of town provided:

    1. The temple function is not affected and
    2. No other Hindu priest is available in the city where the priest is required.

  2. Temple priest is authorized to solemnize the Hindu wedding only in the province of Ontario and only for the couples who have received written permission to get married in Ontario by the government authorities in Ontario

Durga Navaratri Festival — October 11 to October 20

The Hindu Temple of Ottawa‑Carleton warmly invites all devotees to participate in the auspicious Durga Navaratri Festival, beginning Sunday, October 11 and concluding with Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20. Throughout these ten sacred days, the Temple will host a series of devotional events seeking the blessings of Durga Mata for health, prosperity, and universal peace.

Durga Saptashati Parayan

Wednesday, October 14 – Friday, October 16 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm, followed by Aarti at 7:30 pm Devotees are encouraged to join the priests in chanting the sacred Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam).

Navachandi Yaag

Saturday, October 17 — Starts at 9:00 am The Navachandi Yaag will be performed with full recitation of Durga Saptashati. All participants will have the opportunity to offer Homa Dravya (Aahuti) during the Yaag.

8:00 am Saturday, October 17 – 8:00 am Sunday, October 18

This auspicious 24‑hour Ramayan Paath will be conducted both in the Temple and online. The Temple will remain open for the full duration.

Note: As we usually read Sunderkaand on Sundays, there will be no Bhajans or Scripture Reading on Sunday, October 18.

Saturday, October 17 — Starts at 9:30 am (Ottawa time) The Temple will participate in the 19th Akhanda Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanam (Global AVSN).

Program (Lecture Hall, Downstairs)

  • 9:20 am — Samkalpam

  • 9:30 am — Vishnu Sahasranama chanting (five full recitations)

  • Followed by selected Suktams: Purusha Suktam • Sri Suktam • Durga Suktam • (Vishnu Suktam if time permits)

  • Sri Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali

  • Concludes with Archana, Puja, and Aarti by 12:30 pm

Devotees may bring small quantities of flowers, fruits, and prasadam. To register, please email the Temple.

Throughout Navaratri, the Temple will conduct Devi Stuti, Puja, and Aarti every evening.

Temple Anniversary — Saturday, October 24

Morning Program

  • 9:00 am — Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatham; Ganesh Pooja; Sri Rama Parivar Pooja

  • 9:45 am — Kalasha Sthapanam; Kalasha Uddharanam

  • 11:00 am — Sanctification of Shikharas; Placement of Kalasha in the Shrines and Aarti

Deepa Pooja with Lalitha Sahasranama Archana — Saturday, October 24

Afternoon Program

  • 3:30 pm — Sankalpam and Sri Lalithamba Pooja

  • 3:45 pm — Chanting of Sri Lalitha Sahasranamavali

  • 6:15 pm — Uttara Pooja and Aarti

Pooja plates will be distributed to all participants in advance. Devotees may bring small quantities of flowers and fruits as offerings.

To ensure the program begins on time:

  • Participants are requested to arrive by 3:00 pm

  • Volunteers are requested to arrive by 2:00 pm

Please register through Deepa Pooja Registration at your earliest convenience. While registering, kindly indicate if you are available to volunteer in preparing the pooja plates.

All devotees are warmly welcome to participate in the Deepa Pooja.

  • 5:00 pm — Brahma Vidya Scripture Reading Conclusion and Aarti

As part of Brahma Vidya Day, we will read the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and the six Upanishads included in our scripture program: Isavasya, Kena, Katha, Taittiriya, Mundaka, and Kaivalya Upanishads.

Devotees wishing to participate by reading a chapter or portion of a chapter are requested to email: hindutempleottawa@gmail.com Please send your preference by Sunday, October 11 at 6:00 pm. Assignments will be made on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

This program welcomes participants from India and other locations. Therefore, Brahma Vidya Day will be conducted both in person and online.

Please download the Webex application in advance. Participants reading at the Temple will connect through the Temple computer using the same platform. Devotees who wish only to listen or read independently may join through the Temple’s GoTo Meeting link.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES ORGANIZED / CONDUCTED ON BEHALF OF THE TEMPLE

Kitchen Use:

The kitchen may be used solely for preparing prasad, limited to halva and rice only.

Prohibited Items:

Alcoholic beverages, meat, poultry, and fish products are strictly prohibited on the Temple premises, both indoors and outdoors. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are also not to be served. Only water may be offered.

Onion and Garlic:

Out of respect for the sentiments of certain Hindu devotees, the use or serving of onion and garlic in any form is not permitted within the Temple.

Nut Allergies:

Due to the potential for allergic reactions, nuts in any form must not be served.

Disposable Supplies:

The Temple provides paper plates, napkins, plastic spoons, and Styrofoam cups for water for use during Sunday Bhog and other Temple events.

Leftover Prasad:

The coordinator or Seva Mandal must ensure that all leftover prasad is distributed to devotees to take home. Cooked prasad must not be stored in the refrigerator.

PRIVATE POOJAS AND RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES

The kitchen, at present, is not intended for general cooking of meals but as a service facility only.

No Cooking in the Kitchen:

The Temple kitchen is not to be used for any cooking under any circumstances.

Food Source:

Food may be catered or brought pre-cooked from outside.

Washing Restrictions:

Washing of pots or large utensils in the Temple kitchen is not permitted.

Prohibited Items:

Alcoholic beverages, meat, poultry, and fish products are strictly prohibited on Temple premises (both inside and outside). Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are not to be served. Only water may be offered.

Onion and Garlic:

In consideration of the religious sensitivities of certain devotees, onion and garlic in any form are not allowed in the Temple.

Nut Allergies:

Due to the potential for allergic reactions, nuts in any form must not be served.

Serving Supplies:

Devotees are expected to bring their own paper plates, napkins, plastic spoons, and Styrofoam cups for water. In case of emergency, the Temple may provide these supplies at a nominal cost of $50 per set of 100.

Clean-Up Responsibility:

Hosts must arrange for sufficient help to ensure the premises are left thoroughly clean after the event.

Event Timing:

All activities must be completed within Temple hours, and no later than 7:30 PM.

Garbage Disposal:

All garbage must be collected and disposed of in the designated bin located outside the building near the garage.
