SUMMARY:Pitru Paksha Begins
DESCRIPTION:Pitru Paksha\, the fortnight during which homage is paid to the ancestors\, starts from Wednesday\, September 18 and ends on Mahalaya Amavasya\, also called Sarva Pitru Amavasya\, that extends over two days – Tuesday\, October 1 and  Wednesday\, October 2 (as per local Panchang).  Mahalaya Amavasya is considered the most significant day of Pitru Paksha. \nWe expect the temple to be busy during these two weeks. If you would like to offer Shradha / Pitru Tarpan to your ancestors\, you can perform the ritual with the guidance of the priests at the Temple. We suggest that you please call ahead at 613-822-1531 and make a booking. \nAt the temple\, Mahalaya -Sarva Pitru Amavasya will be conducted on Wednesday\, October 2\, and the Temple will be open all day from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm. \n\n———————————–\nPitru Paksha (Sanskrit: पितृ पक्ष\, lit. '”fortnight of the paternal ancestors”‘\, IAST: Pitṛ pakṣa)\, also spelt Pitri Paksha\, is a 16-lunar day period in the Hindu calendar when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors (Pitrs)\, especially through food offerings. The period is also known as Pitri Paksha/Pitr-Paksha\, Pitri Pokkho\, Sorah Shraddha (“sixteen shraddhas”)\, Kanagat\, Jitiya\, Mahalaya\, Apara Paksha and akhadpak.[2][3][4] \nPitru Paksha is considered by Hindus to be inauspicious\, given the death rite performed during the ceremony\, known as Shraddha or Tarpana. In southern and western India\, it falls in the second paksha (fortnight) Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (September) and follows the fortnight immediately after Ganesh Utsav. It begins on the Pratipada (first day of the fortnight) ending with the no moon day known as Sarvapitri Amavasya\, Pitri Amavasya\, Peddala Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya (simply Mahalaya) Most years\, the autumnal equinox falls within this period\, i.e. the Sun transitions from the northern to the southern hemisphere during this period. In North India and Nepal\, and cultures following the purnimanta calendar or the solar calendar\, this period may correspond to the waning fortnight of the luni-solar month Ashvina\, instead of Bhadrapada. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Nag Panchamai
DESCRIPTION:Naga Panchami is a traditional day of worship dedicated to snakes (nagas) observed by Hindus\, Jains\, and Buddhists in India\, Nepal\, and other countries where these religious adherents live. Here are some key points about Nag Panchami: \n\nDate and Significance:\n\nNag Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravana (usually in July or August) according to the Hindu calendar1.\nSome Indian states\, such as Karnataka\, Rajasthan\, and Gujarat\, celebrate it on the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of the same month1.\n\n\nRituals and Worship:\n\nFamilies offer reverential baths to serpent deities made of silver\, stone\, wood\, or paintings. Milk is commonly used for the ritual.\nLive snakes\, especially cobras\, are also worshipped\, often with the assistance of snake charmers1.\n\n\nLegends:\n\nAccording to Hindu Puranas\, the serpent race (Naga) originated from the daughters of Prajapati Daksha—Kadru and Vinata. Kadru gave birth to the Nagas\, while Vinata gave birth to Aruna (the charioteer of the sun god) and Garuda (the carrier of Vishnu)1.\nNaga Panchami is also celebrated as a day to honor the mystical symbolism of snakes\, representing virility and kundalini energy1.\n\n\n\nSo\, Nag Panchami is a day to acknowledge and seek blessings from these fascinating creatures that play a significant role in Hindu mythology

SUMMARY:Hariyali Teej
DESCRIPTION:Hariyali Teej is a significant festival celebrated by Hindu women\, particularly in northern India. Let me share some details about this beautiful occasion: \n\nDate and Significance:\n\nHariyali Teej falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the month of Adhik Maas Sawan (an extra month in the Hindu lunar calendar).\nIt usually occurs in August\, during the monsoon season when the surroundings are lush and green.\nThe name “Hariyali Teej” comes from the word “hariyali\,” which means greenery.\nMarried women observe fasts on this day\, seeking the well-being and longevity of their husbands.\nUnmarried women also fast\, hoping to find a desirable life partner.\n\n\nRituals and Celebrations:\n\nWomen dress in beautiful green attire\, wear green bangles\, and apply mehendi (henna) on their hands and feet.\nThey adorn themselves with attractive jewelry\, following the Solah Shringar tradition associated with marriage.\nTemples are decorated with lights and flowers\, and special food and Prasad are offered to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.\nNewlywed women often visit their parents’ homes to celebrate their first Teej there.\n\n\nBlessings and Devotion:\n\nHariyali Teej is a day of devotion to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.\nWomen seek blessings for their husbands’ well-being and longevity.\nThose who observe the fast with full dedication receive blessings from Goddess Parvati\, fulfilling their desired wishes.\n\n\n\nRemember\, Hariyali Teej is not only a religious observance but also a celebration of nature’s bounty and the bond between spouses

SUMMARY:Shravan Maas Begins: south India
DESCRIPTION:Shravan Maas\, also known as Sawan\, is a significant period in the Hindu lunar calendar. It typically falls between July and August\, marking the fifth month of the Hindu calendar. During this auspicious month\, devotees engage in rituals and worship dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here are some key points about Shravan Maas: \n\nSignificance: Shravan Maas is revered as the most auspicious month. It is charged with Shiva tattvas (Shiva elements)\, which purify the mind\, senses\, body\, and soul through dedicated rituals to Lord Shiva1.\nChaturmas Period: Shravan Maas is the first month of the Chaturmas period\, which consists of four months (Shravan\, Bhadrapada\, Ashwin\, and Kartik) dedicated to bhakti (devotion) and revering the Divine. Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra (deep meditation) on Adi Shesha (the seven-hooded serpent) beneath the cosmic ocean during this time\, while Lord Shiva takes care of creation1.\nLegend of Maa Parvati: According to another legend\, Maa Parvati observed hard penance and fasting throughout the month of Shravan to marry Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion\, Lord Shiva fulfilled her wish. Many women observe Shravan Somvar Fast or Solah Somvar Fast during this month to attract a husband like Bhagwan Shiva1.\nSamudra Manthan: The search for Amrit (nectar of immortality) began in the Shravan month during the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Milky Ocean). Fourteen types of jewels emerged from the ocean\, including the deadly poison Halahal. This event holds great significance in Hindu mythology1.

SUMMARY:Jagannath Rathayatra
DESCRIPTION:Jagannath Rath Yatra – Importance\nIndian festival of Jagannath Rath Yatra is associated with Lord Jagannath\, Maa Subhadra (his sister) and Lord Balabhadra (elder brother). This festival holds immense significance in Hindu religion as it is believed that it is a wish of Lord Jagannath to visit Mathura\, his place of birth\, for some days. So\, in order to fulfill the Lord’s wishes\, the devotees conduct this procession each year which starts from Lord Jagannath Temple till Gundicha Temple in Puri. This celebration is a way to commemorate the visit of Lord Jagannath to Gundicha temple via Mausi Maa temple.
