SUMMARY:Margashirsha Poornima (Satyanarayan Pooja at Temple)
DESCRIPTION:Significance of Margashirsha Purnima:\nThe month of Margashirsha is considered very auspicious in the traditional Hindu calendar. In the Hindu religious scriptures\, this month is also referred as ‘Magsar’\, ‘Agahan’ or ‘Agrahayan’. It is believed that young girls who take a holy dip in the River Yamuna on Margashirsha Purnima will get desired life partner. Just like the lunar months of Vaishakh\, Kartik and Magha\, taking a bath in the holy rivers on Margashirsha Purnima is very important. Pundits and scholars believe that by performing charitable activities on this sacred day\, all the sins will be relieved. On Margashirsha Purnima\, Lord Vishnu is worshipped as ‘Narayana’. Also\, fasting on the day of Margashirsha Purnima grants fulfilment of all desires or wishes.

SUMMARY:Pradosh vrat (Shiva Abhisheka)
DESCRIPTION:The Pradosh vrat can be observed by all irrespective of the age and gender. People in different parts of the country observe this vrat with full devotion and dedication. This Vrat is observed in honour of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. \nIn some parts of India\, disciples worship the Nataraj form of Lord Shiva on this day. As per the Skanda Puran there are two different methods of fasting on the Pradosh vrat. In the first method\, the devotes observe strict fast for whole day and night\, that is\, 24 hours and which also includes keeping a vigil at night. In the second method the fasting is observed from the sunrise until sunset\, and the fast is broken after worshipping Lord Shiva in the evening. \nThe word ‘pradosh’ in Hindi means ‘belonging or relating to the evening’ or ‘first part of the night’. As this sacred vrat is observed during the ‘Sandhyakaal’ that is the evening twilight\, it is called as the Pradosh vrat. \nAccording to the Hindu mythology it is believed that on the auspicious day of Pradosh\, Lord Shiva together with Goddess Parvati feels extremely delighted\, pleased and generous. Therefore the followers of Lord Shiva keep a fast and worship their deity on this chosen day to seek divine blessings.

SUMMARY:Gujarati New Year\, Bhai Dooj
DESCRIPTION:The festival marks sibling bonds\, simplicity\, and devotion\, traditionally celebrated across the country. The festival holds a significant place\, in Maharashtra\, Bihar\, West Bengal and other states of India. Apart from India\, Nepal also celebrates a similar festival termed Bhai Tikka. The festival starts with the preparation of thali. Sisters prepare a special thali that contains rice\, vermilion (kumkum)\, sandalwood paste\, sweets\, and a diya (oil lamp). The thali represents the elements used in the aarti and tilak ceremonies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sisters apply tilak to the brother’s forehead; this tilak ritual is auspicious and is believed to protect the brothers from evil influences. After that\, she performed an arti for their brothers by circling the diya around them while chanting prayers. This is a gesture to invoke divine blessings for their brothers’ long life and prosperity.

SUMMARY:Diwali (Diwali in India 1stNovember)
DESCRIPTION:Diwali is also known as ‘Deepavali’\, which literally means rows (avali) of lights (deepa) in Sanskrit. This festival of lights is celebrated on the darkest night (Amavasya) of the Kartik month in the Indian calendar\, and it symbolizes the vanquishing of ignorance (darkness) by knowledge (light). \nThe festival of Diwali has many rituals\, traditions\, and stories associated with it. On the surface\, these traditions may seem very mundane and insignificant but there is a beautiful meaning hidden behind each and every aspect of the Diwali celebrations.

SUMMARY:Karwa Chauth

Chandrodaya time (moonrise) is at 7:54 PM.  \nPlease bring the following samagri (items) for the pooja. \n(1) Kum-kum Powder ;  (2) Red Thread (Moli);   (3)  Chawal (Rice) ;  (4)  Phool (Flowers);   (5)  Phal (Fruits);  (6) Pan -Five Betel Leaves; (7) Supari (Two big betelnuts)  (8) Deepam (Lamp)  (9) Thali-One (10) Kalash (Pot) One\, and (11) One Spoon. \nPlease contact the priests at the Temple for any additional information at 613-822-1531 \n—————————————————————————- \nHistory and Story of Karwa Chauth\nKarwa Chauth is made up of two words; ‘Karwa’ which means earthen oil lamp and ‘Chauth’ which means four. Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day of the Kartik month in the Hindu Calendar. This is a very popular time of the year where friends and family get together to celebrate and meet the festival. The festival of Diwali is celebrated after nine days of Karwa Chauth. Karwa Chauth was initially used to celebrate the alliance between the bride and her in-laws\, but with time the ritual has changed. Nowadays Karwa Chauth is celebrated to seek blessings from the Almighty for husband’s long life and beneficial health. \nAs compared to the Southern India\, Karwa Chauth Fasting is more popular in the North. After the four day span of Karwa Chauth\, Ahoi Ashtami is celebrated for the well being and longevity of sons. Even though the original meaning of Karwa Chauth has changed with time from what it used to be but still the ritual of having a day long fast is followed with utmost enthusiasm and passion among the Indian women for the long life of their husband. \nThe History of Karwa Chauth is drawn backward to the ancient times. It is believed that Karwa Chauth was celebrated to cherish the bond between the bride and the women in her family. Now\, whatever the Karwa Chauth Story says\, it is now celebrated with amazing passion and is considered as one of the most auspicious occasions to cherish. The festival certainly reinforces the bond of love\, both between the wedded and committed couples. Thus\, it is seen as one of the most wonderful and special occasions for the couples.

SUMMARY:Pitru Paksha Begins
DESCRIPTION:Pitru Paksha\, the fortnight during which homage is paid to the ancestors\, starts from Wednesday\, September 18 and ends on Mahalaya Amavasya\, also called Sarva Pitru Amavasya\, that extends over two days – Tuesday\, October 1 and  Wednesday\, October 2 (as per local Panchang).  Mahalaya Amavasya is considered the most significant day of Pitru Paksha. \nWe expect the temple to be busy during these two weeks. If you would like to offer Shradha / Pitru Tarpan to your ancestors\, you can perform the ritual with the guidance of the priests at the Temple. We suggest that you please call ahead at 613-822-1531 and make a booking. \nAt the temple\, Mahalaya -Sarva Pitru Amavasya will be conducted on Wednesday\, October 2\, and the Temple will be open all day from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm. \n\n———————————–\nPitru Paksha (Sanskrit: पितृ पक्ष\, lit. '”fortnight of the paternal ancestors”‘\, IAST: Pitṛ pakṣa)\, also spelt Pitri Paksha\, is a 16-lunar day period in the Hindu calendar when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors (Pitrs)\, especially through food offerings. The period is also known as Pitri Paksha/Pitr-Paksha\, Pitri Pokkho\, Sorah Shraddha (“sixteen shraddhas”)\, Kanagat\, Jitiya\, Mahalaya\, Apara Paksha and akhadpak.[2][3][4] \nPitru Paksha is considered by Hindus to be inauspicious\, given the death rite performed during the ceremony\, known as Shraddha or Tarpana. In southern and western India\, it falls in the second paksha (fortnight) Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (September) and follows the fortnight immediately after Ganesh Utsav. It begins on the Pratipada (first day of the fortnight) ending with the no moon day known as Sarvapitri Amavasya\, Pitri Amavasya\, Peddala Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya (simply Mahalaya) Most years\, the autumnal equinox falls within this period\, i.e. the Sun transitions from the northern to the southern hemisphere during this period. In North India and Nepal\, and cultures following the purnimanta calendar or the solar calendar\, this period may correspond to the waning fortnight of the luni-solar month Ashvina\, instead of Bhadrapada. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Shravan Maas Begins: south India
DESCRIPTION:Shravan Maas\, also known as Sawan\, is a significant period in the Hindu lunar calendar. It typically falls between July and August\, marking the fifth month of the Hindu calendar. During this auspicious month\, devotees engage in rituals and worship dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here are some key points about Shravan Maas: \n\nSignificance: Shravan Maas is revered as the most auspicious month. It is charged with Shiva tattvas (Shiva elements)\, which purify the mind\, senses\, body\, and soul through dedicated rituals to Lord Shiva1.\nChaturmas Period: Shravan Maas is the first month of the Chaturmas period\, which consists of four months (Shravan\, Bhadrapada\, Ashwin\, and Kartik) dedicated to bhakti (devotion) and revering the Divine. Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra (deep meditation) on Adi Shesha (the seven-hooded serpent) beneath the cosmic ocean during this time\, while Lord Shiva takes care of creation1.\nLegend of Maa Parvati: According to another legend\, Maa Parvati observed hard penance and fasting throughout the month of Shravan to marry Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion\, Lord Shiva fulfilled her wish. Many women observe Shravan Somvar Fast or Solah Somvar Fast during this month to attract a husband like Bhagwan Shiva1.\nSamudra Manthan: The search for Amrit (nectar of immortality) began in the Shravan month during the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Milky Ocean). Fourteen types of jewels emerged from the ocean\, including the deadly poison Halahal. This event holds great significance in Hindu mythology1.
